East Bench Community Updates & Events

CHaRMS Event

The Utah Recycling Alliance hosts periodic CHaRM events, which stands for Collection of Hard to Recycle Materials. An upcoming event will be held in our neighborhood, in the north parking lot of Hogle Zoo on April 19, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Bring old batteries, light bulbs, tires, mattresses, and more; check here for a list of accepted materials.

Landscaping Equipment Exchange

SLC residents have an amazing opportunity to swap gas landscaping equipment for electric through the city’s exchange program. Starting April 3, with just a proof of address, you can apply for vouchers to significantly decrease the cost of this transition.

If you would like to recycle your gas-powered lawn mower, you can receive a $299 voucher for a new one; if you will not be recycling you can still apply for a $159 voucher towards a new electric mower.

Vouchers for handheld tools such as chainsaws, trimmers, and leaf blowers are available. Recycling old tools allows you to get $149, while without you can get $79.

Donner Trail Park

Exciting news! A portion of the recently adopted “GO Bond” proceeds has been allocated to improve Donner Trail Park. Salt Lake City is seeking input from residents about how to best use these funds for improvements to this park. Please take this survey to register your views.

H-Rock Access

Due to erosion resulting from heavy usage that occurring at the site, access to the H-Rock is restricted while restoration of this area takes place. Please stay on trails to help vegetation grow back. Learn more here, and direct any questions or concerns to SLC Public Lands.

Kensington Byway

The Kensington Byway is a part of a network of streets the city is reworking to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The current byway stretches along Kensington Avenue from West Temple to 1600 East.

The next phase will continue east from 1600 East through Wasatch Hollow Park up to Foothill Drive. The recent completion of a UDOT project links Kensington Ave by creating a crosswalk with a signal across Foothill.

This project includes the addition of a center-running median on Foothill Drive, which prevents left-turns from both Kensington onto Foothill and Foothill onto Kensington, much to the dismay of many local residents and despite objections from the EBCC.

Crossing Guards Needed

Too much time on your hands, and you love kids?  Consider becoming a crossing guard yourself (it is part time) – maybe even “tag team” with another member of our neighborhood to split the job.  Not a lot of monetary pay, but what you get in smiles from the kids….Priceless! Learn more about how to become a crossing guard here.
